Housing Investment

April 5, 2019

Just how much is the government investing in housing?  The UK Housing Review shows that in recent years, government investment in housing has increased and will reach around £70bn from now until 2023.

However, 79% of this investment goes toward funding the private sales market and does this leave sufficient funding for affordable housing options?

The good news is that in addition to the Affordable Homes Programme which is currently £9.1bn, further investment of £3.42bn can be achieved if all councils use their new borrowing freedoms.

From 2022 a further £2bn will be invested in affordable homes based on Theresa May’s pledge at last year’s National Housing Federation conference. The £3bn announced in the Chancellor’s Spring Statement brings funding for affordable homes up to almost £15bn between now and 2023, albeit that investment in private sales homes is £55bn over the same period.
