Construction Resourcing
March 15, 2019Bricks, mortar, tiles, kitchens and many other items as well as labour are needed to build homes. The construction industry sources many of these items from Europe on a favourable basis and with Brexit, certainty of supply is in jeopardy and if supply can be maintained it has yet to be assessed as to what the cost impacts of Brexit will be (See blog article 1/3/19).
It is calculated by the Department for Business, energy and Industrial Strategy that 62% of materials are sourced through Europe with Office for National Statisitics indicating that 28% of workers on construction sites are from the EU.
With no Brexit deal in sight, there are concerns that many workers will not be able to stay in the UK and incoming goods may attract higher tariffs which will push up the cost of development in the medium to long term.
