Kamsons Pharmacy thriving after Stroudley Walk regeneration

As part of its £2.5bn reshaping programme, Poplar HARCA’s Stroudley Walk Estate in Bromley-by-Bow is now a thriving area of affordable homes, shops and community spaces.

Delivering this urban regeneration scheme required commitment and the co-operation of residents and local retailers, including Kamsons Pharmacy.

“Kamsons has been established in Bow for 25 years,” says the pharmacy’s professional development manager Mark Donaghy. “Thankfully, our loyal customers and patients helped us survive the disruption of being cordoned off within a demolition and construction site.

“Despite our reservations, Poplar HARCA’s project director, Mike Nestor, reassured us through the initial teething problems with the end vision, and he was a pleasure to deal with.

“The surrounding upgrade prompted us to refit the premises for the 21st century.  We now have two consultation rooms and offer a comprehensive range of services for the community including health checks, advice, vaccinations, the supply of antibiotics, contraception and other NHS and private pharmacy services. 

“Given this and the modern, greener surroundings, our footfall has increased. Our devoted staff, many of whom have worked here for more than 20 years, also enjoy their new working environment.”

Mike Nestor, who is now chief executive of Askival, said he is delighted to see Kamsons benefiting from the completed regeneration of Stroudley Walk.

“It was a particularly challenging project,” says Mike.  “It took five years to get planning permission, and then the compulsory purchase order (CPO) took so long to secure that the planning permission expired and a new application was required.  But Poplar HARCA got the project moving again quickly after the Covid pandemic, with strong support from the local community and businesses such as Kamsons. I am very pleased to have been part of the team that laid the foundations for such a successful outcome.  It is really good to know that Kamsons continues to thrive.”
