London Mayor’s letter to Secretary of State

March 1, 2019

Sadiq Khan, the G15 group of large housing associations and London Councils have written to James Brokenshire, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, to set out their concerns about a ‘no deal’ Brexit or a Brexit deal that is bad for the Capital.

They advise that either of these options would impact heavily on a very wide range of businesses and communities. In particular they state that housing and construction would be affected with the ongoing uncertainty around Brexit already having an impact on these sectors.

Their areas of concern include:

  • Affordable Housing delivery
  • Supporting continued delivery
  • Construction workforce
  • Construction materials
  • Supporting national housing delivery targets of 300,000 properties per annum

The Greater London Authority (GLA) has calculated that to compensate for the loss of market sale subsidy and “adequately de-risk” housing association and council programmes, £5.2bn of “emergency grant investment” would be required.
