Honouring Thomas Kendrick at IDS’s new affordable housing scheme

July 18, 2024

Our chief executive Mike Nestor and associate Tim Cork recently attended the Industrial Dwellings Society’s (IDS) reception on World Refugee Day to celebrate the life of Thomas Kendrick.

The event was held near IDS’s recently completed new affordable homes scheme in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire which the Askival team oversaw from planning through to practical completion.  Our work continues alongside Site Sales who are marketing the 27 affordable rent and shared ownership apartments.

In honour of war hero Thomas Kendrick, IDS has named the scheme Kendrick Court.

Thomas Kendrick, as his biographer Helen Fry described him ‘The Spy who Saved MI6’, masterminded an operation to eavesdrop on the conversations of over 10,000 German prisoners of war at his three special sites, including Hitler’s generals and Field Marshals at Trent Park in North London, after their capture on the battlefields.  The intelligence gained by Kendrick’s unit – including the work of the ‘secret listeners’ – has now been recognised by Historic England as being “on a par with the codebreaking at Bletchley Park for the outcome of the war”.

IDS Finance Director Omar Mapara said: “The scheme has been a real success story.  With Askival’s help we were able to increase the number from 17 to 27 homes and overcome various challenges along the way.  The result is a scheme of high-quality construction, which was delivered on time and on budget.  We like to think that Thomas Kendrick would be happy that we have named this scheme Kendrick Court in celebration of all his remarkable achievements.”
